Laguna de Apoyo is simply an incredible place. It is a nature reserve between the departments of Granada and Masaya with a crater lake in an extinct volcano.
The water is fresh and clean and it was nice to swim without pain after all the jellyfish in the ocean. We rented bikes to go to Catarina, a small town located at the top of the crater with a great view. Somehow we always managed to be slow so that by the time we were ready, it was midday and we got fried by the sun. It was a very steep ride up and of course we did not walk and push the bikes nor did we get on the back of a truck to get a ride :-).
Don’t miss:
The Hostel Paradiso right in front of the lake. Yes, it is a paradise and offers great possibilities to enjoy this outstanding place. The facilities are nice and they have different things to play around with in the lake. You can also rent bikes or just relax in one of the many hammocks.
Things to watch out for:
The bikes. Two of our three bikes broke during our bike ride. They are not made for biking up the crater. And even less for coming back down again if you know what I mean…
