Swimming in the Aare River is one of the most typical things about Bern. On a warm day, thousands of people take a dip in the river and cool down while floating downstream. There are two main areas where this is done: One is the Marzili bathing area, with a view of the Parliament Building. This place gets crowded as it is very popular among the youngsters. The other area is north of Bern’s Old Town, a neighbourhood called Lorraine. I prefer this one, as it is much quieter there and it has a very local feel to it. Although I swim in the Aare almost every day in the summer, I cannot get over how amazing it feels. Down at the river time stands still for a while and you get taken in by a very relaxing and peaceful vibe.
This is why we love Bern!
